October is my FAVORITE month of the year. I was joking but I definitely started to sing “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” to my room mate, who just laughed at me. The horror movies, the pumpkin everything, pumpkin carving, eating all the chocolate in existence, and of course, dressing up, I LOVE everything about it.

But this year is very different. I find myself scared all the time. I’m scared of the pandemic, I’m scared for my city of New York, I’m scared for my older parents, I’m scared to just go to the grocery store. I’m frankly quite happy for October for all the horror films to redirect my fears in a story as opposed to thinking about our world.

Yet at the same time, it’s just so gloomy, and maybe you feel anxious. I’ve been having a hard time realizing that my favorite events of October, some costume parties, the New York Halloween Parade, and trick or treating are all canceled. When I recovered from COVID back in April I was ready to move on, to forget about how scared I’d been for my life, and to proceed with the usual, but now with talk of a “second wave,” and no sign of the pandemic ending, it’s hard not to be discouraged. But I am going to celebrate Halloween no matter what! And I have some zoom parties lined up that I’m dressing up for!

Here are some fun costumes for this strange and already terrifying year to celebrate Halloween.

Anyone from Tiger King. Remember when everyone was talking about Carol Baskin? Honestly, this feels like years ago, but you might have these costume items in your closet! Just grab a flowy shirt and make a flower crown for Carol Baskin, or find a animal print shirt, a baseball hat, and if you’re feeling crazy, paint on a beard for the Tiger King himself, Joe Exotic.

I apologize if your name is Karen, but easy costume! Just wear any shirt you already own, and buy a wig in the iconic Karen haircut.

Harry Styles in his Watermelon Sugar video. Grab an orange tshirt and those iconic glasses and pop them on for zoom!

Lars and Sigrit from Eurovision Song Contest. This film had some over the top outfits and if you have the time, why not go all out! There’s lots of silver, flowy hair, and grab an Icelandic background on that zoom call!

The Baby Sitter’s Club. Have you seen the revamp on Netflix? It was so great! Why not have a group costumer with your girls over zoom?

Harley Quinn from Birds of Prey. Yes, this was this year. She’s such an icon, put your hair in pigtails with a chunky necklace and white t-shirt! Done!

Moira Rose from Schitt’s Creek. You know you want to. Grab your best oversized sunglasses, red lipstick, and most outrageous black and white top.

Whatever you choose to go as this year, make sure you’re having fun! And remember, you only need the top half of it for zoom! I’ll definitely be in my standard pajamas on the bottom.
