What do you miss most from BC (Before COVID)? As an extrovert I miss socializing, I miss friendships, I miss hugging my family without quarantining for 14 days. I also love the movies. I love going to the movies, eating popcorn, analyzing movies with my filmmaker siblings, and the whole experience of going to the movie theatre. In my city of New York there are so many theatres to choose from, from the biggest IMAX screen in the US, to the underground indie cinema with 12 seats, the old recreated 1920’s marquis cinema next to the Plaza, and even cinemas serving dinner. I loved going to the movies with my friends and enjoying a well-crafted story. I miss the movie theatres more than ever.

So my sisters decided that with a little imagination, we could create our own.

My sister already had a projector, so we decided to set it up outside in our backyard. We set up a sheet on the fence and it worked perfectly!

We bring out comfy chairs and even blankets, and my mom pops popcorn and puts it in brown paper bags for each of us.

We’ve even started having people over to “go to the movies” with us! We use the tape measure and make sure we’re six feet away, and since we’re outside, the air is circulating much better. And then they bring their own drinks and chairs to the showing.

It’s been a great way to hang out with friends and still see people, from a distance.

We’ve been working our way through the American Film Institute’s Top 100 films, as well as been having our own classic Disney films party.

If you don’t have a projector, bring a TV and an extension cord outside, bring a laptop! You can get creative!

Whatever you miss from BC, use your imagination to make it real again, albeit a little differently.
