This year has been rough. Rough in so many ways.
Every month we face something new and stressful and sometimes life-changing. Stress and anxiety are perfect reactions to the chaos that we are facing. But, how can we maintain a healthy mental state in the midst of living in this post-pandemic world?
Here are some ways that I have being dealing with the stress and anxiety that I have been feeling lately:
- Sleep
- Exercise
- Healthy Diet
- Essential Oils (lavender)
- Support from Friends and Family
Now, those five items have helped me, but a few months ago when school started and I had to juggle teaching online and face to face, and helping my sons through their school, my anxiety was high and I felt I was treading water with a cinder block tied to my ankle. A friend said, “do not feed the fears.” Now at first I nodded my head and said, “OK”, all the while thinking you have no idea what I’m going through, how could that advice help!
Well, it made me think. Stop feeding your fears. My fears tied the cinder block to my ankle and I had to take it off. I needed to realize that I have control over what I let enter my mind. I control my thoughts and I can control what I allow to enter my mind. In other words, I need to stop feeding my fears. I need to stop thinking “what if….” and then create a scenario that has a terrible outcome. I need to put up mental boundaries and not let my fears feed my anxiety. And to be honest it’s hard. But, I have found that if a conservation is going into a topic that causes me stress, I can change the subject or simply walk away. Thoughts can be planted in our heads and we allow thoughts to grow through our imagination and get worse. In other words, if watching horror movies terrifies you, put up that boundary and don’t watch them. We don’t have to allow our fears in our minds. Being more mindful of what doesn’t cause anxiety and focusing on that has really helped me.
Don’t get me wrong, I still feel stress and anxiety.
I’m learning what thoughts I need to stop and how I can control the direction my mind wants to take them. Like I said, this year is rough and we really need to focus on mental self care. Don’t be forced to feed your fears. You can control what you allow in your mind.
