Our house was flooded in August.

Nothing like the victims of the recent hurricanes and tornado damage.  But an unknown leak in a valve on our wall behind a toilet spilled water while we were out of town at a wedding.  This small leak went undetected until we were away, and no one was home to flush the toilet that continued to fill until it began to overflow.

Upon our return we were welcomed home to a soggy mess that is just now being repaired,  the second week of November.

Alan and I started to get used to living amongst the chaos and honestly, I felt a sense of relief at times to not feel the need to clean or dust amongst the boxes that have creeped into our family room, dining room, kitchen, bedrooms…. you get the picture.

It didn’t stop us from having friends or family over.  We just cleared a path and entertained in our back yard.  We even had friends gather in our driveway for Halloween.  Now that the walls and floors are being repaired and my laundry room has been put back together, I will no longer have any excuse to make myself keep things in order.

Amid the chaos it gave me the opportunity to sort through drawers, closets, and bookshelves.

I realized I have assumed the role of chief historian of our family mementos and as the leading curator I now have the role of deciding what we keep for “historical” value of course.  The treasures include a note card from my late mother, a photo of my father-in-law that now looks just like my husband, my MIL’s wedding dress and so much more that I have once again boxed away for my daughters to sort through some day.

But one of my favorite surprises was a tiny plastic fairy that belonged to my youngest daughter when she believed in Fairies.  We all used to write her notes and place them in the garden for her to find.  She is now a grown woman living and working in the UK, but that tiny doll brought back so many memories of fun times raising my daughters.

I know it can seem crazy sometimes especially with the holidays approaching and just like a flood in my house your PMS mood swings may come on strong and seem like out of nowhere, but remember to look for something that may just brighten your day, perhaps you too will find it in the back of a drawer.
