May 26, 2022; 12:40 pm, my summer of ‘22 began.

It was a fun, exciting, and busy last day of school.

It began with me waking up a high school sophomore, an 8th grader, and a 5th grader to the fabulous song by Alice Cooper, “School’s Out for Summer”.   We celebrated this holiday with donuts for breakfast and then watched my youngest son graduate 5th grade. After 5th grade graduation, my high schooler and middle schooler experienced their last day of school.

They ended up celebrating with their friends once that 12:40 bell rang.  The soon to be junior in high school met his friends for delicious tacos and then went swimming.  It’s great that he can drive now!

I took 4 soon to be freshmen, to play laser tag and video games, and then 2 soon to be middle schoolers to get snow cones.  Then 5:30pm came, and I realized I wasn’t just tired, I was end of a long and difficult school year teacher tired.

I don’t want to speak for all teachers, but there is nothing like end of a school year tired.  And this year was a hard one.  I felt like I hit a brick wall.  I was physically exhausted and mentally and emotionally drained.  Not only was the entire school year hard, but the last week was one of the most difficult.

I spent the next 3 days relaxing at home, and what is surprising, my active and quite social boys enjoyed the down time just as much as me.  We watched movies and enjoyed Stranger Things 4.  It was the perfect start to summer ‘22!  But, it’s June and now the playtime, activities, and socializing begins.

Now is the time that I get active.  I love to take advantage of my free time and get active and on a fun workout schedule.  Since my boys have to continue strength and conditioning for sports, it motivates me to be active and workout as well.  June is the time for pool days!  After hard workouts, relaxing in the pool and getting vitamin D is perfect.  Also, reading a fun book poolside is the best.

June is the month that my boys plan their social calendar, and by that I mean they just ask randomly, “Can so and so come over?”, or “Can we go do a breakout room with so and so?”.  These unplanned events usually end in a sleepover and lots of summer energy in my house.  But, the laughter of boys in my house is the sounds of summer, just like the cicadas outside.

The start of summer is magical and it’s a time to refresh and just smile and laugh.  Hope you all enjoy the beginning of your summer and I hope it’s magical.
