S’mores are that iconic summertime treat.
You associate them with sitting around the campfire, singing songs, telling stories, laughing, divulging scary stories, and being with friends and family.
S’mores are a great memory and they’re in that category of summer food like popsicles, hot dogs, corn on the cob, and watermelon.
The traditional s’more is made up of only three ingredients, the graham crackers anchoring the marshmallows and chocolate into a dessert sandwich.
The s’more was originally called a Some More and was created by the Girl Scouts. The first recipe for the concoction appeared in the 1927 Girl Scout Guidebook Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts, which gave advice on how to be a Girl Scout and popularized this famous recipe.
Girl Scout Troop Leader Loretta Scott Crew is the woman who first created the Some More for her troop and then it became popular among all girl scouts, and the recipe was called a Some More by the Girl Scouts until 1971.
Putting these three ingredients together was the new idea, but roasting marshmallows was popular earlier. In the 1890’s there was a marshmallow roasting fad on the East Coast of the United States in small summer resort villages where young people would go to meet other young people.
And the graham cracker was around even before that!
The graham cracker was actually invented by a Presbyterian minister Sylvester Graham as a way to curb sexual desire. He believed that baking something so bland would help stave off this “immoral” hunger. So he created the graham cracker in 1847.
We now just eat the graham cracker exclusively in s’mores and other desserts, but to create a gourmet s’more there are all kinds of possibilities. You can add any number of other ingredients from sprinkles, to chocolate chips, to dipping your graham cracker in chocolate, to peppermint, to mint leaves, to granular sugar, to using chocolate chip cookies instead of graham crackers, to adding a brownie on top; the possibilities are endless.
The root of the s’more or the Some More is the sandwich like aspect of the graham crackers and the roasted marshmallow and chocolate in between.
I also like to get a little bougie and add some specialty chocolate. I really love dark chocolate, and it always helps me when I’m PMS-ing, and throw that into my s’more.
S’mores might be the perfect treat for this summer and hanging out with your friends and family, but they’re also great for when you just need that chocolate bar during your menstrual cycle time of PMS. I know even when I take my oaa supplement (oxaloacetate) or Jubilance for PMS I am still forever craving sugar, so this moderated chocolate might be the solution (you know you’re just adding one piece).
I wanna know if you tried making your own gourmet s’more and what you used! Please email me at hello@jubilance.com, I can’t wait to see what you made! No stress, just add whatever you like!
